What is Qigong?

The word Qigong (or Chi Kung or Chi Gung) is made up of two Chinese words.  Qi is pronounced chee and is usually translated to mean the life force or vital-energy that flows through all things in the universe.  The second word, Gong, pronounced gung, means accomplishment, or skill that is cultivated through steady practice. Together, Qigong means ‘energy work’ or cultivating energy, and it is essentially a system practised to promote health, healing and vitality.

This ancient Chinese exercise system aims to stimulate and balance the flow of qi along the acupuncture meridians, or energy pathways.  Qigong is used to reduce stress, improve blood circulation, enhance immune function and treat a variety of health conditions.

Qigong requires no special clothing or equipment and can be even be done in a small space.  It can be performed sitting on a chair, in a wheelchair or standing.

Certain physical injuries, particularly of the back and neck, may prevent you from practising.  If you’re in any doubt, ask your doctor if you should be attending classes and make sure Karen is aware of your condition.

My heart is as calm as still water without the least wind stirring
I sit undisturbed taking thousand breaths
Suddenly in the midnight
I enter a wonder land
With rolling waves and rising sun in sight
